5 Minutes of Hope — January 2026

5 Minutes of Hope
Education & medical access in hard places

This Month’s Story

One post. One neighborhood. A big impact.

Sometimes, hope starts with something simple.

Lisa Kelly, a Give Hope volunteer in Lake Wylie, decided to see what would happen if she invited her neighborhood to help collect children’s books for schools in Ghana. She posted in her neighborhood Facebook group and shared the need.

What happened next was powerful.

Neighbors showed up. Families donated. Kids got involved. Together, they collected over 500 gently used children’s books. Lisa even hosted a small gathering at her home where neighborhood children helped prepare the books for library use — learning that they could be part of something bigger than themselves.

They also collected spare change, discovering that it costs about 25 cents to ship one book across the ocean to help build a library in Ghana.

Lisa shared afterward that the experience was meaningful, simple to organize, and something she believes anyone can do.

One post. One gathering. A lasting impact.

Hope in Action This Month

Because of volunteers like Lisa — and because of this community — something incredible is underway.

  • Thousands of books are being prepared and shipped to Ghana

  • A brand-new school library is being launched at Sowers Academy

  • Students who have never had access to a library will soon be choosing books of their own

  • This library will serve as a long-term resource for learning and growth

This is what happens when simple acts of generosity come together to create something much bigger.

A Moment of Hope

Books collected here are creating moments like this for students in Ghana.
